No words will ever describe the beauty and the importance of this album to so many (myself included). At the tender age of 13, what more was there but "Disintegration"? The Cure's album eighth deep into their (late) 80s career, rich with stylistic shifts that never harmed their innovative consistency. The album that still is just light years away from now. The majestic opening that is "Plainsong" is so mesmerising, that powerful hi-hat/stabbing keyboard riff pouring in, keeps sweeping anyone off their feet to start with... Thirty years on, I think I'm old (and it's so cold) - and when we'll all be long gone, this album's splendour will continue to shine on new generations in the manner of the greatest big bang.

One of those albums that didn't need to be messed with, period. The original 1989 mastering on compact disc is the definitive version. Mastered with wide dynamic range and plenty of headroom so it can be turned up loud as the booklet instructs. The 2010 remaster simply adds compression and boosted bass that does the music no favors - it just kills the spaciousness and atmosphere of the album. There isn't any good vinyl version either, so don't bother. The old pressings, even though they cut a couple tracks, were still compromised because they crammed too much music on each side and the 2010 and onward reissues use the crappy remaster as a source. Find any old pre-2010 CD if you want to hear the album properly.

There are no "norms" with vinyl these days since quality of sources, cutting, and pressing run the gamut. There are very well done releases out there (a small minority) and loads of half-assed crap. The album didn't need to be remastered, period.
CopamHuk
2010 pressings use a less compressed source of the 2010 remaster (as is the norm for vinyl these days) and sounds fine. Have you listened to it on a good setup?

Has anyone out there encountered the same problem I've had with the 2010 Reissue? Omg I've tried 3 copies all of which have been returned thank goodness because at least here in Canada they are very expensive selling for around $50 New Sealed. The songs are clear and bright but the surface noise is unbearable right from the drop of the needle. The Rabbit is eating away destroying the beautiful songs before in-between and during most. Rhino reissue so not to surprised but for such a great Cure album not in my collection am super disappointed. Also Discogs is saying that there was a 2016 Reissue but is it? All the local record stores when searching to order brings up the 2010 version only in stock to purchase and am not going to do that again.
Urreur
The 2016 Universal/Polydor reissue is sold in the European market only, so getting a chance at a decent pressing means you have to find a seller in the EU who can export it for you.All the copies I've seen at record stores in the US and Canada... they're the 2010 Rhino pressing, which is unfortunately the victim of Rainbo Records' wonky quality control. It is unlikely that a local Canadian store would have the 2016 pressing - which again is EU-only. Given the many reported cases of undue surface noise on the 2010 Rhino version including yours, I'd agree they are waaaaay overpriced for what they are. Thank goodness I've never gambled to try one.

I have both the 1989 original vinyl and cd (a few different pressings of each format) as well as the 2010 remastered on vinyl and cd (deluxe). I’m probably an outlier here but I prefer the original 1989 mix on cd. I used to think the original mix was too muddy and dull even when played loudly. BUT that was because my ears were too accustomed to loud heavy on the low end mixes from the mid 90s to present day. Disintegration is a desert island album for me so with the release of the 2010 remaster with all 12 songs across 2 discs, I couldn’t wait. The original ‘89 vinyl sounds really good considering its length for 1 disc but corners were cut to make it work. The 2010 reissue on vinyl is absolutely what to get if you want it on wax. Great pressing. Sounds fantastic. I’ve already burned through a couple copies. So why do I ultimately prefer the original 1989 cd? Keep in mind it was released when cds were the preferred format by record labels...you know the history. Basically when Disintegration was released it was intended to be heard on cd (digitally) even though it was recorded and mixed on tape. The 2 “bonus tracks” were just a marketing gimmick to buy the cd. (Such a shame to the vinyl version but oh well). Now the original cd master...because of the flaws related to its vinyl companion, the cd is the closest we have to what Robert, the band, and the producers and engineers intended the project to sound like. The 2010 remaster cd helped me understand that. With a nice pair of headphones and a decent CD player (or a nice dedicated dac when playing ripped files), I think you’ll understand there’s a lot of magic deep in the mix that the 2010 remaster overshadows with extra bass and volume. It’s easy to find a used ‘89 cd for $5 more or less vs $40+ for an original clean vinyl. Can’t go wrong.
invasion
None of the Cure remasters sound any better than the old Elektra or Fiction CDs, full stop. All they do is add a different EQ and some compression, neither of which was necessary. The only reason to buy them at all is for the bonus material, or because you want to support the band by purchasing an extra copy of an album you already have. Maybe one day we'll get high quality DYNAMIC, un-futzed remasters from a label like MOFI or Intervention but I wouldn't hold your breath for that.
NI_Rak
Well, after the release of the double LP, which includes all the songs of the album, this version is to be kept for sentimental reasons only.'Homesick' and 'Last Dance' give a whole new dimension to the experience and the quality is far better than the original, which despite the 25+ minutes for each side, it sounded very good.
Amhirishes
This should have been a double album, a great shame that ace tracks like "Last Dance" and "Homesick" were not included on the original vinyl issue.
Tejar
Bought the vinyl virtually the day of release sadly it sounded as though the record was already 10 years old crackle and pop all the way through!! The recording mix is also quite rough and flat and doesn't do the songs justice. The previous release (Kiss Me) sounds fantastic and ear splitting loud even though the discs are super thin.On the positive side the cover has a very nice cracked glaze pottery effect only visible in certain light......
The_NiGGa
mietersemichiel I bought 3. All sounded like shit. Finally got the remastered 2LP version. Good to know, thanks! Bought the remastered version as well. It's way better but still far away from being perfect imho.
Androlhala
I bought 3. All sounded like shit. Finally got the remastered 2LP version.
Ann
Same for my copy. Bought it recently. Even though it still looks perfect, it sounds crap. Pops and crackles all over, very flat sound, left channel on A-side with lower volume than right channel. Horrible.
Haralem
Anyone else seem to think this version of the LP is recorded way too low thus making it of inferior sound quality?
skriper
Yes its very quiet due to it's 30 minutes per side. Way too long for vinyl. It should have been originally released as a double record (with the other 2 tracks added) like KM,KM,KM and Wish.
Steelrunner
Yes, exactly, but other versions (German for example) are much worse.

The high-topped sneakered prophet of gloom, Robert Smith, opens the majestic atmospheric and expansive album Disintegration with the line, I think it’s dark and it looks like rain ...,” emblematic of all that The Cure have stood for. While there are those who would have you consider that Disintegration is just more of the same, it took the apparent mildly light-hearted release of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, to bring about this monumental opus of minor keyed songs, songs laced with drowning images designed not so much to invade your dreams, but to invade your waking hours. And to that end, The Cure managed to capture not only the essence and feel of impending doom and melancholy, but set it to verse, where the tunes are perhaps best sung on the bus while looking through smudged windows, or hummed while in class to ward off the boredom ... coalescing all of the rumors and majesty of this bewildering band into one crowning achievement that will never be equaled. All of the work by The Cure, and especially this release, were packaged and designed to be carried like shields, or banners of expression, as were the albums of Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jim Hendrix back in the hazy 60’s; where tribes were formed, with hair and music being the passkey. You’ll find no angelic cries of exhalation here, nor will you find any hellish sustained misery either ... what you are treated to is the bleak angst that shrouded the 80’s and all of it’s excesses. Disintegration can also seen as a coming of age, or perhaps the end of an age album, though as I stood there in my mid 30’s, wrapped in my oversized coat and untied sneakers, feeling for all the world like I was yet again in the right place at the right time, I had the distinct feeling that I was perhaps a bit of a spy in the house of love, and that I should be letting a younger generation have their naive hazy hay-day of discovery. Never the less, with perfect makeup and fashion to match, I danced into the wee hours of the morning like some proverbial ghost, haunting the side streets and after hours clubs. With all of this being said, Disintegration is all consuming in its sadness, longing, and emotional grandeur. It’s far from a teenage album filled with whines and despair ... it’s an indulgence into the dark nether regions of our subconsciousness, formulated to challenge the nature of our being as we come face to face with all we though we knew, with discovering the lies we’d held as fact [lies told to us, and lies we told to ourselves], finding that the only way to escaped the melancholy is to find the beauty within it, and once done, this soundtrack, or highway marker of sorts, gets shelved and nearly forgotten, until your hand stumbles over it, and a smile of satisfaction for those bygone days crease your face.Review by Jenell Kesler

But, please youngsters, don't believe this is "shoegaze"... It is dark, melancholic, pop music with guitars, sometimes with a smile or a grin. and mr. smith don't have to look at the ground while playing guitar....
Dalallador
I played this album today after many years and I am surprised how good this still is.After almost 25 years this has become a classic in the genre (?).The layers of sound , the lyrics and the songs stood the test of time very easy.If you try one Cure album this is the one and you will not be disappointed.
Ce
The original Promo Vinyl release of this album is the one for collectors and audiophiles. It is the only version of this album that is pressed to vinyl using DMM Direct Metal Mastering.
Blackbeard
The double LP version that they released on 2010 is by far the best version of this album, i have 3 different pressings of this record
Madi
You know for a fact that it was cut directly from the master tapes? A lot of vinyl from that era was digitally sourced....all accounts I’ve heard are that the original vinyl is poor sounding.
JOGETIME
True, not automatically, but in the case of this pressing it does as it sounds better. Also, from the original master tapes and not a "remaster".
Gralsa
Being mastered using Direct Metal Mastering doesn’t automatically make a release ‘audiophile’. In any case, I can’t see it bettering the reissue due to particularly the length per side.
Stonewing
Incredible superb this album is a masterpiece from start to finish. Melancholic dark and sadness since the deeper vision made that this album be unique. The emotional lyrics and the sublime voice of Robert Smith join perfectly with the melancholic deep guitars and with the darkness and synth enviromental sounds created by Roger O'Donnell. Certainly, for me, a inprescindible record to understand the philosophy and the depth of the music created by this musicians.
Akinozuru
I gather that the casual Cure fan is as crazy about Disintegration as any other old Cure album. Everything is here. The grand soundscapes. The melancholic guitar leads. The hurting vocal! Add to this a Robert Smith in a near death mood lyricwise what more can a fan ask for?! My main grip with this album is that it is so archtypical Cure nothing surprises. And devoid of any smash hits this falls directly in my pile of "Well ..." albums. Newcomers looking for the band in a much better shape should start with The Head On The Door. If you like this you may try your luck with Disintegration.
Jediathain
I thought it was only me. Agree that this was poorly recorded compared to previous albums
Ygglune
Okay, my "non-helpful-button" was bit too hard! To start again: in my opinion it's not that bad to start with the Disintegration album into Cure. For example, myself started into Pink Floyd with a quite comparable album - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, quite disliked by some hardcore Pink-fans. Nonetheless, I learned to experience the whole Floyd from this album on. Well, and Disintegraton like A Momentary Lapse Of Reason are two of my favourite albums til today ... and stand next to Meddle, Faith, Pornography and The Wall. Sigh, all those memories ... ;0)!Hope this reply won't be deleted as my last was.
