Be What You Are is a 1973 soul album by The Staple Singers. It reached number 13 on the Billboard Top Soul LPs chart. The first single, Be What You Are, fared poorly however, the follow-up, If You're Ready Come Go with Me, was a top ten hit, peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the R&B Singles chart. The third single, Touch a Hand, Make a Friend charting at number 23 on the Hot 100 and number three on the R&B chart in 1974. The Staple Singers: все альбомы, включая Will the Circle Be Unbroken , A Gospel Program , Come Go With Me: The Stax Collection и другие. Over the next few years, The Staple Singers saw 12 chart hits, including Respect Yourself and I'll Take You There, both off their 1972 breakthrough album, Be Altitude: Respect Yourself. The Staple Singers, signed to the label in the late '60s, always provided hit singles and respected album efforts. Despite their gospel beginnings, the Staple Singers' biggest draws became Pops Staples' blues-based devil's music guitar and Mavis Staples' breathy and sexy vocals. Their 1972 album, Be Altitude: Respect Yourself, all but set the template for their subsequent work. Be What You Are in some respects is an often overly cautious follow-up.
