Album

A Map of the Floating City is the fifth studio album by English musician Thomas Dolby, released on 24 October 2011. It is his first full-length studio album since 1992's Astronauts & Heretics. The album's concept, set in an alternate history, is accompanied by a web-based social networking game designed with the help of Andrea Phillips and J. The game ran from June to September 2011, and the group that won the game received a private Dolby concert. Largely absent from the music scene since 1992's Astronauts & Heretics, '80s synth pop pioneer Thomas Dolby appears to be making up for lost time with his fifth effort, A Map of the Floating City, a rather ambitious concept album released in conjunction with a same-name video game based on a dystopian vision of the 1940s. It is his first full-length studio album since 1992s Astronauts & Heretics. Many of the songs were released prior to the album, on his 2010 EPs Amerikana and Oceanea. A Map Of The Floating City Q&A. People might naturally assume that Thomas Dolby - the man who once yelled Science at us back in the New Wave days of the early '80s - is still grooving to all things electronic. But on his luminous new album his first release in nearly 20 years, A Map Of The Floating City, he draws upon a wide range of influences, artists who wouldn't know a synthesizer from a garden hoe. It's everybody from Dolly Parton to Dan Hicks, Dolby says. And some Louis Armstrong, too. Nearly 20 years since his last album, 1992s Astronauts & Heretics, Thomas Dolby releases a concept album about a repressive society in the 40s that might have existed had WWII turned out a lot differently, according to Dolby. His pioneering work as a synth-pop artist in the 80s and as a much-heralded producer are to his advantage as he clearly understands how to assemble sound pieces that are gloriously avant-garde yet fascinating and accessible. Spice Train sounds like a computer program overloading. Evil Twin Brother, featuring Regina Spektor, is an arresting piece of spy-movie. Thomas Dolby album bestography.
