Today, Wil Malone is a first-call arranger in the music industry The Malone Arranger , naturally who has worked with pretty much everyone from Corinne Bailey Rae to Massive Attack via DJ Shadow and The Verve. Back in 1970, however, the tireless Orange Bicycle Fickle Pickle mainstay and Morgan Studios operative was the progenitor of a needlessly obscure solo album, dribbled on to the marketplace with minimal fanfare by Fontana, which has since been recognised as a classic of acid-fo. One of those albums that sold approximately 10 copies in 1970 only to subsequently transform into a massive collector's item 30 years later with copies achieving a couple of thousand pounds on auction sites. The original 12 track album is a well orchestrated suite of fairly whimsical psychedelia showcasing a flair for arranging. Whether you like Wil's fey vocals is a matter of taste (I do).

The additional album is a welcome bonus... it contains the track 'L.A' which is a feel-good masterpiece of sunshine pop with amazing 'Pearl & Dean' style vocals (the only way I can describe them). I really love this song which I discovered by complete accident. It's extremely commercial, sounding almost 'classic' and yet I would be surprised if more than a very few people even know of its existence.

Wil Malone went on to 'greater' things as the decades passed by - although, depending upon how you measure these things, you may not think he made anything as charming or as unique as these two albums. If you look at his writing/arrangement credits in Discogs you will find out how much stuff he has contributed to over the years... notably Cliff Richard, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, The Verve, Massive Attack, Spice Girls, UNKLE... a veritable who's who of commercial music from the last few decades.

By the way - the cover shot of this album is unintentionally hilarious depicting Wil in a spooky wizard's gown looking suitably sheepish in the woods.
